UCR Celebrates Cesar Chavez Day

The University of California, Riverside will celebrate Cesar Chavez Day with two community events.



1. Saturday March 30 – Cesar E. Chavez 5K Fun Run/Walk-a-thon, 9 a.m. to noon, at the UCR Track and Field, corner of Canyon Crest Drive and Linden Street.

o What – The event will raise money for El Centro de Aztlan and the Centro de Niños, two community groups that help children in Riverside’s Eastside neighborhood. The Event will also raise money for the Movimiento Estudiantíl Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) Alumni Scholarship Fund, which helps Children who plan to attend UCR.

o Sponsors – MEChA and Chicano Student Programs at UCR, and the Chicano Educational Cultural Fun – which is not affiliated with UCR.

2. Monday April 1 – Cesar Chavez Celebration Through the Arts Day of Service, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Cesar Chavez Community Center, 2060 University Ave.

o What – Celebration of the values Cesar Chavez stood for through service to the community. Participants will repaint the interior of the community room at the center as well as the gardens at the front and rear of the building. The center provides numerous programs and services for the children of the Eastside of Riverside.

o Sponsors – The Governor’s Office of Service and Volunteerism (GO SERV); the University/Eastside Community Cooperative (UECC), AmeriCorps Projects; UCR; the City of Riverside; and the Riverside Unified School District.
