RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- Award-winning investigative journalist, documentary filmmaker, columnist, media commentator and New York Times best-selling author Max Blumenthal will speak at UC Riverside’s University Theatre on Thursday, October 1st at 7:30 p.m.

The talk is free and open to the public. Parking on campus is $5. Blumenthal’s appearance is part of the “Issues and Dialog” series co-sponsored by KUCR 88.3fm and The Highlander, the UCR student newspaper.

The son of former top advisor to President Bill Clinton Sidney Blumenthal, Max is a Puffin Writing Fellow at the New York-based Nation Institute, a research fellow for Media Matters for America and senior contributor at The Daily Beast. Blumenthal's first book, "Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party," was published in September 2009 and is now a New York Times best-seller. Blumenthal will sign books after his talk.

Blumenthal’s work has been featured on NPR, MSNBC, The Nation, Washington Monthly, The American Prospect, The Huffington Post, Salon Magazine, Al Jazeera English, Alternet, Democracy Now!, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Morning Joe and The Rachel Maddow Show, among many others.

Max’s investigative reporting has been cited by the Boston Globe, The American Prospect, San Francisco Chronicle, CBS News, Newsday, Rocky Mountain News, Christianity Today, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Chicago Tribune, Fox News and Time Magazine, among many other news outlets. He has been honored with the USC Annenberg Online Journalism Award for investigative reporting.

In 2003, Blumenthal won the Online News Association's Independent Feature Award for his investigative article in Salon.com, "Day of the Dead.” The piece examined the killing of hundreds of women in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, and possible connections between the killings and the policies of the corporations with factories in the border city.

In his latest book, Blumenthal sets out to explain how in his view a "culture of personal crisis" has defined the American "radical right."

Following Blumenthal’s presentation, a panel will engage him in a critical dialog on the issues he presents. This panel will include UC Riverside Professor of Religious Studies Jonathan Walton, a regular guest on the nationally syndicated Tavis Smiley Show. Other panelists will include Riverside City College Trustee Mark Takano, and UCR Highlander Newspaper Opinions Editor Christopher Records.

KUCR Director Louis Vandenberg will moderate the event. "We’re pleased to present a vital and cutting-edge journalist of such distinction," he said. "We expect it to be one of the most interesting and provocative programs presented at UCR in years.”

This Issues and Dialog Public Affairs event is presented by UCR’s student media: KUCR radio 88.3fm with The Highlander Newspaper. For more information, please call (951) 827-3457 or (951) 827-3140, or visit www.highlandernews.org or www.kucr.org.
