UCR Seeks Summer Math Participants

UCR Seeking High School Girls To Launch Summer Math Program

(April 23, 2002)

The University of California, Riverside is seeking high school girls from throughout the region who want to participate in a new, intensive weeklong summer mathematics program.

The new high school program, titled Girls Excelling in Mathematics Successfully (GEMS), mirrors much from similar UCR programs for middle-school girls, which are held in Riverside, Redlands and the Coachella Valley. The high school program is scheduled to run from Monday July 29 to Friday Aug. 2 at the UCR Student Recreation Center.

Program organizers anticipate the impressions made during the GEMS academy will motivate girls to pursue mathematics and science-oriented careers. Participants will learn about the impact of mathematics and science to their daily lives, receive mentoring from successful women, learn about community service and develop positive attitudes, said Pamela Clute, director of the ALPHA center at UCR. The ALPHA Center sponsors the academy with support from The Bank of America, Athena of the Inland Valleys and the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.

Participants will receive daily snacks, duffel bags, books, T-shirts, water bottles, and items needed for the day’s activities. Participants will be responsible for transportation to the academy. The deadline for applying is Friday May 10.

To obtain an applications and for other details, call program coordinator Jan Carter at (909) 787-2962 or send her an email message at janice.carter@ucr.edu.
