UCR Offers Free Summer Programs For Middle-School Boys and Girls

(May 10, 2002)

Middle-school students can have fun, stay fit and get a jump on next year with two free weeklong summer programs that mix learning with physical fitness. The application deadline for both programs is May 24. Applications may be obtained by calling the ALPHA Center at UCR at (909) 787-5425.

Healthy Body-Healthy Mind focuses on developing a well-rounded person by stressing health education, fitness, nutrition and a positive mental attitude. Participants will learn the math behind health, how physical activities relate to a healthy lifestyle, and why self-motivation is important to character development. The program runs from 9 a.m. to Noon, July 29 to Aug. 2, at the UCR Student Recreation Center.

Project WISE (Wisdom Integrating Sports and Education) links academics, fitness and positive thinking. Mathematics and writing will be the primary academic activities with weight training, cardiovascular fitness, nutrition, and team sports dominating the program’s physical component. Project WISE runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., June 24 to 28 at the UCR Student Recreation Center.

Maps and directions to both event are available at information kiosks at the University Avenue and the Canyon Crest Drive campus entrances, or on the campus web site at www.campusmap.ucr.edu.
