Math Academy Starting This Summer at UCR

(May 13, 2002)

The University of California, Riverside is accepting applications until May 24 from high school girls throughout the region interested in a program that exposes them to college-level mathematics.

Girls Excelling in Math with Success (GEMS) is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., July 29 through Aug. 2, at the Student Recreation Center, which sponsors the program with the ALPHA Center at UCR. For Application and other details, call Jan Carter at the ALPHA Center, (909) 787-5425.

GEMS stresses mathematics as an interesting and relevant career pursuit. It emphasizes the importance of community service and of successful women role models to encourage more girls to prepare for and pursue mathematics-based careers.

The ALPHA Center was established in 1998 to increase the historically low rate of college-qualified high school graduates from inland Southern California, and to ensure their success once enrolled. At the time, one in three inland Southern California high school students qualified for college, well below the 60 percent statewide and 65 percent national averages. ALPHA Center staff answer this need by creating programs like GEMS, which prepare students who need help getting into or excelling in college. The center staff also trains teachers to more completely master their subjects, and researches how students learn and which teaching methods are most effective.

Student and teacher-based ALPHA programs have reached about 84,000 students and 6,700 teachers. Research has helped ALPHA staff develop nearly 90 programs that reach out to more than 150 school sites in Riverside, San Bernardino and eastern Los Angeles counties.

Maps and directions to the Student Recreation Center are available at UCR information kiosks at the University Avenue and the Canyon Crest Drive campus entrances, or on the campus Web site, www.campusmap.ucr.edu.

The University of California, Riverside (www.ucr.edu) is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students. The campus opened a medical school in 2013 and has reached the heart of the Coachella Valley by way of the UCR Palm Desert Center. The campus has an annual statewide economic impact of more than $1 billion.

A broadcast studio with fiber cable to the AT&T Hollywood hub is available for live or taped interviews. UCR also has ISDN for radio interviews. To learn more, call (951) UCR-NEWS.
