UC Riverside Chancellor Issues Statement on Athletics and Integrity

(April 12, 2011)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White issued a statement on Tuesday, April 12:

“On Monday widespread news reports claimed that a UCR men’s basketball player was recently contacted by persons allegedly attempting to illegally affect game outcomes. We are closely monitoring the situation and are proceeding with our own fact-finding efforts.

No active UCR student-athlete or Athletics staff member has been accused of wrong-doing. In addition, no one in leadership or Athletics at UCR was contacted by investigators in the time leading up to the charges, which were unsealed on Monday, April 11.

I want it known that we take allegations of this kind extremely seriously. We hold our student-athletes and coaching staff to the highest standards of integrity, and believe that fair competition is the foundation of intercollegiate athletics. Moreover, any association between sports gambling and our athletics program is expressly forbidden and violates all manner of standards, including our own and those of the NCAA. We fully support the statement released yesterday by the NCAA reaffirming this core principle.”
