RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- UC Riverside was ranked 25th on a list called “Great Values, Great Prices,” in the 2012 U.S. News and World Report ratings, released on Sept. 13.

The list factors in the affordability of the campus for its students. UC Riverside offers more need-based financial aid than many other universities.

Overall, the annual rankings puts UC Riverside at 97th among the 262 national universities in the country, based on categories developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The campus was tied for 6th in the nation when it comes to diversity.

Among public universities, UC Riverside is 44th in the nation.

The annual rankings by U.S. News and World Report, first issued in 1983, are frequently used by families as they decide where to target applications. The rankings combine reputational rankings with the hard-data outcomes related to graduation rates, tuition costs and level of donor support.

UC Riverside tends to do well when rankings focus on affordability, graduation success and public service outcomes, which was clear in a recent Washington Monthly ranking that put the campus at #5 in the nation.

UC Riverside ranks between 102 and 150 in the world in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Among U.S. universities in that ranking, the campus is between 54 and 68, so slightly higher than that U.S. News ranking.

U.S News and World Report factors in reputation, which means college presidents and provosts, as well as high school guidance counselors, get to report their gut feeling about a campus. Reputational rankings are harder to predict or control. UC Riverside has invested in marketing campaigns to get UCR’s research successes in front of university presidents and other opinion leaders.

“Student success, diversity, learning and research excellence go hand in hand,” said Chancellor Timothy P. White. “We now have a strategic plan in place to chart our course to increased extramural funding for research and creative activity; awards and honors; philanthropy; and national and international recognition.”
