Role Models to Speak at UCR

(February 2, 1999)

Middle school girls from Riverside, Moreno Valley, Colton and Menifee will gather in the UCR Commons from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 to hear words of wit and wisdom about math and science from five prominent women in the community.

The event is part of Project Athena, a National Science Foundation project at the University of California, Riverside, designed to boost the interest and success of young women in mathematics and science.

Cecilia Cartman Seals, a nurse practitioner from Kaiser; Debbie Guthrie, owner of Huffman Roofing in Riverside; Leslie Ann Boockoff, a geologist from the San Diego Natural History Museum; Ofelia Valdez-Yeager, assistant to the superintendent of the Riverside Unified School District; and Laurie Lucas, a feature reporter for The Press-Enterprise will talk about how they use mathematics, science and technology in their careers.

All together, 224 girls -- and their parents -- have been invited, from middle schools in Riverside Unified (Central, Chemawa, Gage, Sierra); Moreno Valley Unified (Landmark); Alvord Unified (Wells); Colton Joint Unified (Terrace Hills) and Menifee Valley Unified (Menifee Valley). Project Athena is one of several projects run through The Alpha Center (Academy of Learning through Partnerships for Higher Achievement) at UCR.
