UCR Graduate School of Management Names Three Management Leaders

(May 15, 2000)

Three Inland area managers will receive the Management Leader of the Year Award from the University of California, Riverside's A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Mission Inn.

This eighth annual awards lunch will honor Debbi Huffman Guthrie, president of Huffman Roof Company; Salvatore Rotella, president of Riverside Community College; and Gregory Devereaux, city manager of Ontario.

"All three of these managers have demonstrated exemplary leadership, innovative management practices and contributions to the business community," said Alan H. Lewis, assistant dean of external affairs for the Anderson Graduate School of Management. The a wards are divided into three categories: private sector, public sector and not-for-profit.

Guthrie, of Riverside, earned the Management Leader of the Year Award in the private sector, Lewis said. She is the third-generation owner of a roofing company established by her grandfather in 1921.

She has also donated her time generously to community causes, including the United Way, UCR, RCC, the Boy Scouts, the Junior League, Childhelp USA, among many others. And she established a California ATHENA award, highlighting women who are models of effective leadership. She has won numerous awards for her own leadership, both in her industry and in the community. They include the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1994 from Ernst & Young, Inc. Magazine and Merrill Lynch; and the 1999-2000 Volunteer of the Year Award from the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.

Rotella, president of RCC, earned the Management Leader of the Year Award in the not-for-profit sector, Lewis said. Rotella oversees the 26,000- student Riverside Community College, with campuses in Riverside, Moreno Valley and Norco.

Before coming to California, Rotella was chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago and served as vice president for academic affairs at Nassau Community College of the State University of New York.

He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago and taught at several universities, including Stony Brook University Center, part of the State University of New York. He has lectured widely and as a graduate student, earned a fellowship at the University of Pavia in Italy.

Devereaux, city manager of Ontario, will receive the Management Leader of the Year Award for the public sector, Lewis said.

Twenty years of public service has taken Devereaux from West Virginia, to Southern California, where he has worked in various aspects of community development in Long Beach and Garden Grove before serving as city manager in Fontana between 1992 to 1997.

In 1997, Devereaux began managing the city of Ontario. He has embarked on an aggressive program to boost the economy and restructure the city's staff to better serve residents and the business community. The city ended the fiscal year in June 1999 with a surplus of $8.4 million, money that will be re-invested in the community.

The UCR Management Forum, which gives out the awards, is a roundtable for regional business leaders and management faculty at UCR.

Tickets for the event are available for $25 per person or tables of eight for $200. Reservations must be received no later than Friday, June 2. For reservations or more information call (909) 787-4592.
