A Viewing of Mars From UC Riverside on Aug. 26

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- (www.ucr.edu) -- The public is invited to get a close look at the planet Mars via telescopes set up for viewing at UC Riverside. The event is free of charge.

WHAT: The planet Mars is closest to earth in nearly 60,000 years. On Aug. 27, Mars will be less than 34.65 million miles (55.76 million kilometers) away when it is at "opposition," lined up with Earth on the same side of the Sun. The next opportunity to see Mars this close or closer to Earth will be in the year 2287.

WHERE: Loading dock area, Physics Building, near the Science Library (map at www.campusmap.ucr.edu).

WHEN: 11 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003. (Highest elevation of Mars for clearest viewing -- 40 degrees above the horizon due south -- will be at approximately 12:30 a.m., Aug. 27, 2003.)

MORE INFORMATION: Call 909-787-5642. In case of inclement weather or cloudy skies, the event will be canceled.

PARKING: Parking on campus is $6 per vehicle for the day or may be purchased for shorter periods at $1 per half hour. Parking permits are available at the information kiosks near the University Avenue and the Canyon Crest Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard entrances.
