UC Riverside Extension Offers Summer Classes for Gifted Children

Extension offers Expanding Horizons and Individual Summer Courses for Kids

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — This summer, the University of California Riverside Extension will offer a variety of academic and enrichment classes, known as Expanding Horizons, for eager, talented, and gifted students in grades 3 through 7. There are also individual youth classes for children in grades 5 through 8. Expanding Horizons is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, July 19 through July 30, at the UC Riverside Extension Center, 1200 University Ave. Cost is $345 per child and $295 for each additional sibling in a family. The registration deadline is July 12.

    Expanding Horizons Classes
  • DESIGN THROUGH MATH — Mathematics and geometry offer unlimited and beautiful patterns and designs for creating art. This class will use lines and string to create colorful geometric designs. Participants will also learn to use a compass to create flowers. In the end, participants will use graph paper to create a counted cross-stitch bookmark.


  • ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS — Create your own society, print your own money, open your own business and learn to live successfully with a community of your own design. Participants can keep business records, write advertisements or become a banker, newspaper writer, insurance broker or self-made millionaire.


  • MATH AROUND THE WORLD — The best games from around the globe and throughout time have relied on numbers, geometry, probability and logic. Participants will discover the worldwide intriguing patterns through games, number systems, and construction of a variety of projects.


  • PAPER, PAINT AND PIZZAZZ — Young artist can enjoy the unique experience of exploring their creative talents visually by creating art using simple everyday materials. The emphasis is on creating and developing each student’s own artistic ability. On the last day students will produce an art show and share refreshments.


  • BEGINNING FRENCH — Say “Bonjour” to the fascinating French language, culture and people. Students will enjoy a special treat of French pastries, which they will order using their new French vocabulary.


  • FUN WITH WORDS: CREATIVE WRITING — Develop creative talent by having fun with words while you improve writing skills. Students can gain experience through fictional writing, collaborating with others and exploring new techniques to increase their skill and help them understand the functions of creative expression. Students will produce a journal of their own personal writing as a keepsake.


  • BEGINNING SPANISH — An introduction to the Spanish language and culture, including beginning conversation, games, songs and traditional Spanish food.


  • GOLD DUST OR BUST! — Step back in time to the year 1849, and live the story of the California Gold Rush as it unfolds in the lively musical, Gold Dust Or Bust! Become a forty-niner in spirit, and tell of the trials and sing about the journey shared by these early pioneers as they made their way west by land and by sea.


  • Individual Youth Classes
  • LEARNING SKILLS — Grades 5-8
    This course assists students in increasing their efficiency by identifying how they learn and process information and demonstrating how to adapt their learning styles to different learning situations. Topics include time management, note taking, test taking, organizational skills, building self-esteem, learning styles, and communication. Group activities involve problem solving and methods for developing an individual educational plan. Enrollment is limited.
    Date/Time: 8:30 am-12:30 pm, Monday through Friday, Aug. 9-13.
    Location: UC Riverside Extension Center, 1200 University Ave.
    Fee: $145 (includes notebook and handouts for five meetings)
    Registration: Requested by Aug. 5.


  • EXPLORING ALGEBRA — Grades 5-8
    This pre-algebra course is an exploration of integers, order of operations, properties, number theory, linear equations, and graphing functions, and is for students who have not had an algebra class. There will be an emphasis on problem solving. Students will need a scientific calculator, a ruler, and graph paper.
    Date/Time: 9 a.m. to Noon, Monday through Friday, 16-20.
    Location: UC Riverside Extension Center, 1200 University Ave.
    Fee: $75/$65 each additional family member (five
    meetings)
    Registration: Requested by Aug. 12.
