RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Camelia Voin has performed in opera houses around the world. But singing in Carnegie Hall, the most prestigious concert venue in the world, was a particular honor.

Voin, a voice lecturer at the University of California, Riverside, won first prize in the 2009 Barry Alexander International Competition in the adult professional category and was invited to perform in recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Jan. 25.

“In the world of concert venues, Carnegie Hall is the most prestigious worldwide, signifying the highest level of performance a performer could achieve,” said Voin, a lyric coloratura soprano who has taught voice at UCR since 2006.

The annual Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition recognizes excellence in performance in four categories: high school, college, adult amateur and professional.

In announcing Voin as the winner in the professional category the judges said her performance “reflects the depth of interpretation, musicality, and technical expertise needed to distinguish oneself in the world of professional performance.”

Voin studied at the Bucharest Conservatory of Music and holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Redlands and a Master of Music Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University, where she is enrolled in a Doctor of Music Arts degree program.

She performs locally and internationally as a soloist in opera as well as in oratorio. She has performed with opera houses such as Teatro Gayarre in Spain, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, West Palm Beach Opera, Bucharest Romanian Opera, Russian State Opera in Kisinau, Erfurt Opera Theater, Opera Guild of Southern California - Los Angeles and The Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert.

She has performed in concert with the Pablo Sarasate Orchestra in Spain, Stuttgard Philharmonic, Bucharest Philharmonic, Pacifica Chamber Orchestra, Kammerochester Pro Musica Darmstadt, Inland Empire Symphony, Los Angeles Performing Arts Orchestra, Arad Philharmonic, Redlands Symphony Orchestra, Loma Linda Symphony Orchestra, and many others.

Among Voin’s awards are: the Verdi Award – Palm Beach International Opera Competition: first prize in the Sorantin Opera Competition, Metropolitan Opera Competition (Los Angeles Regional), and Palm Springs Opera Competition; third prize in the Stuttgard International Competition and the International Voice Competition Julian Gayarre (Jose Carreras was president of the jury); and first prize and Singer of the Year, National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Audition.
