Executive MBA Students Heading to Boot Camp

UC Riverside's second cohort of Executive MBA students will be in Lake Arrowhead starting Sept. 21 for a weeklong "business boot camp"

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- A special weeklong “business boot camp” – the kick-off event for UC Riverside’s Executive MBA program will put working managers and entrepreneurs through their paces next week among the pine trees in Lake Arrowhead.

The 15 students, who range in age from 30 to 45, will take classes in leadership, marketing and organizational behavior, complete program assessments, and participate in special team building exercises, such as a ropes course, from Sept. 21 to 28 at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center.

The program participants, which include several physicians, company owners, a CPA, managers in finance, manufacturing, distribution and aerospace, represent the second cohort at the UC Riverside School of Business Administration Executive MBA program, said Jack Gregg, the school’s assistant dean for corporate relations.

The school launched the innovative 21-month fully accredited MBA program last year with an initial cohort of 10 students, which include professionals from real estate, information technology and construction management. They are now beginning their second year.

“This program has been a life changing experience,” said Brian Rojas, a project manager for Castlerock Builders and a member of the Executive MBA cohort that began last year. “I’ve taken the lessons from my UCR Executive MBA to work with me on Monday mornings and have seen the impact on our processes and effectiveness.”

The Executive MBA program is self-supporting and compliments the 40-year-old full-time MBA program at UCR. It is designed for experienced managers, professionals, entrepreneurs and senior leaders who want to advance their careers or take their firm to the next level. Successful applicants have a minimum of seven to 10 years of work experience managing people, budgets, projects, new ventures or business units.

To minimize impact on work and family, classes are held every other Friday and Saturday at the UCR Palm Desert Graduate Center. On Friday night, students study together while being housed at a hotel across the street from the graduate center. Program fees cover all books, hotels, meals, international classes and program services.

The program – which uses the lock-step cohort model, in which students take all their classes together – also includes an opening and closing “residential” and an international educational trip after the first year. The first cohort of students went to Shanghai in June and met with leading international companies for briefings on how to connect their Inland Southern California organizations to the new global economy.
